Women who - because of their gender
- are targeted for certain types of violence must be granted a
meaningful opportunity to speak as a class in the system that is
designed to provide justice while deterring and punishing the
violence. Because so many criminal defendants are males - women
will never have a loud enough class-based voice in criminal law
practice and policy unless they invite themselves to the table -
rather than waiting for a seat.
This workshop will focus on the failure of early law reform
efforts with an emphasis on new ideas and specific proactive
ways in which women as a class can generate a new effective
reform movement by injecting a regular voice for themselves at
the trial and appellate levels of the criminal justice system.
This workshop will also involve a showing of and discussion
centered around the new documentary film "Rape Is . . . " This
powerful film showcases the true nature of sexual violence and
emphasizes the need to build on the theme of "no means no" by
focusing on the value of personal autonomy, bodily integrity,
gender equality and respect for humanity. |
