Abstract:

Many young people are unwitting victims of physical and sexual violence in the context of courtship. For young females in particular, the experience of victimization may be the most defining characteristic of some relationships. Sadly, many who are exploited by others whom they trust are slow to recognize the abusive interactions that harm them. This workshop explores two related themes of important to law enforcement, educators, prosecutors, medical personal, parents and friends. First, in order to avoid abusive partners, what must we know to recognize the often-subtle forms of manipulation that define harmful relationships? Second, how can we minister to those who are victims of such exploitation? In ach instance, this talk will focus on the character of the problem with an eye toward practical strategies for change.
