For many crime
victims and the advocates who serve them, the news media are a
bunch of voyeurs at best or vultures at worst. This is
especially true with victims of sex crimes, who often must
depend on these strangers in the business of providing
information to withhold information to protect the victims’
privacy and/or safety. The good news is that reporters, editors
and photographers are people too, and advocates can turn them
into powerful allies in the movement to prevent and eliminate
sexual violence. The media can and should serve as allied
professionals in times of crisis and social change agents all
the time.
This session will begin with an overview of the news media,
including print, radio and TV news, as well as the op/ed page.
It will include a “behind the scenes” view of the training,
perspective, and pressures experienced by reporters, editors,
photographers and videographers. The session will include a
segment on developing relationships with individual media
staffers and using what advocates can provide to the media as a
draw-in to a mutually beneficial relationship. Finally, it will
cover how to use the media as an ally in times of crisis and for
social change throughout the years. |
