The Trial of Angelo Sherman

Presenters: Timothy R. Walsh, Deputy District Attorney, San Diego County District Attorneys Office

Date/Time:  March 15, 2002, 1:30 p.m.- 3 p.m.

Abstract:

Rape and other sexual assault cases are difficult to investigate, prosecute and present to a jury. This is true even when the victims are conscious of what happened to them and have a clear memory of the events of their assault. In a drug facilitated sexual assault case, where the defendant drugs a victim causing her to lose consciousness and not remember where she was or a majority of the events of her assault, the case becomes much more complex. If you multiply this type of situation many fold you have the case of People v. Angelo Sherman. That case involved six victims, over 3000 pages of reports, over 200 potential witnesses, and assaults that took place over a period of seven years.

Deputy District Attorney Tim Walsh and District Attorney Investigator Harold Eisenga took on this enormous case. Over an almost two year period of time they investigated, charged, and, after an 8 week long trial, convicted Sherman of 22 serious felony charges resulting in a 125-years to life prison sentence for Sherman. During this session, this Prosecution Team will familiarize you with some of the prosecution and investigative techniques they used that lead to the conviction of this serial rapist.
