"SART is a multidisciplinary team, consisting of law enforcement, medical, advocacy and judicial.” The San Diego SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) program began in San Diego County in 1991. Today, there are two medical facilities that provide the adult SART program. These are Palomar Pomerado Health in North County and VillaView Community Hospital in San Diego. Both of these hospitals have provided services since 1991.
This session will review six (6) sexual assault cases from the crime scene and evidence collection to criminal justice outcomes.
The format of each case review to be discussed is as follows:
- History
- SART examination
- Crime Scene Evidence & Investigation
- Crime lab findings
- Evidentiary Impact
- Law Enforcement Conclusion
- Criminal Justice Outcome
Saliva, skin cells, urine, vomit, swabs and other biological fluids/specimen are excellent sources of DNA often found at the crime scene. In cases of sexual assault, the crime scene includes the bodies of the victim and the suspect. The potential for DNA is limited only by the resources available.
