Cases of drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) are on the rise in the United States and throughout the rest of the world. The classic example involves a male secretly slipping the drug into a
woman's beverage. After consumption of the beverage, the woman becomes severely incapacitated or unconscious. The male, taking advantage of the
female's state of mind, sexually assaults the woman.
There are many challenges that face the investigators of DFSA. These challenges include:
1) Being aware of the many drugs used to commit DFSA, their effects upon the human body, and their pharmacokinetic
properties
2) Understanding and acknowledging the complexities of reporting this type of
crime
3) Properly collecting and analyzing the physical evidence.
This presentation will discuss these challenges in detail and provide suggestions to overcome some of these challenges.
