Rape and battering do not exist in a vacuum – rather they are part of a cultural fabric that defines manhood through domination and disconnection and promotes men as superior to women. This interactive session will examine sexual assault and domestic violence in the context of the culture of masculinity and explore strategies for engaging boys and men as allies with women in creating gender equity, fostering relationship health, and preventing men’s violence. Specific attention will be given to the lessons learned and techniques used by Men Can Stop Rape (MCSR) in its work with more than 20,000 youth and youth-serving professionals nationwide over the past five years.
In particular, the session will shine a spotlight on the Strength Campaign, MCSR’s innovative PSA and educational effort designed to highlight ways men can be strong without being violent and to emphasize the vital role young men can play in preventing all forms of dating violence. Launched initially in all Washington, DC public high schools, organizations and institutions in more than 35 states now display and utilize Campaign materials to raise awareness and empower young men in their communities. Discussion of the Campaign will center on unique aspects of its development and content, examine its impact both locally and across the country, and address MCSR’s plans for expanding the Campaign into a nationwide effort accessible to schools, neighborhoods, organizations, professionals, and youth everywhere.
