This is a multi-media presentation given by Dr. George McClane, an emergency medicine specialist, and Assistant City Attorney Gael B. Strack, a veteran domestic violence prosecutor. Together, the instructors cover the following areas:
- The findings from a study of 300 misdemeanor attempted strangulation cases
- The medical aspects of strangulation
- The legal aspects of investigating and prosecuting attempted strangulation cases
- Practical tips for all professionals handling strangulation cases
- Using experts in court
The course objectives are to:
- Increase the awareness of the lethality of attempted strangulation
- Increase the identification of the subtle signs and symptoms of a strangulation victim
- Improve the documentation of evidence for attempted strangulation cases
- Increase the prosecution of strangulation cases
- Elevate prosecution of strangulation cases from misdemeanors to felonies
- Develop local experts to use in trial
- Prepare experts to testify in court
