| |
Civil liability concerns have become increasingly significant for law enforcement officials involved in domestic violence intervention. Increased understanding of the new legal climate will help individuals and agencies reduce their exposure to law suits and damage awards. It is possible to reduce exposure to civil liability without compromising the effectiveness of domestic violence intervention strategies by managing liability instead of liability managing you.
This lecture will review key cases that define duties and obligations of law enforcement officials in domestic violence cases. The lecture will conclude with recommendations for policies and procedures that will help to reduce unnecessary exposure to civil liability.
