Call for Research Participants in a Study of GHB-Facilitated Sexual Assault

Dr. Steve Smith (Emergency Department physician at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN) and Dr. Deborah Zvosec, PhD., Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation have been conducting research on GHB-related health issues since 1998, including GHB overdose, GHB addiction and withdrawal, and GHB-facilitated sexual assault.

In an attempt to address the critical lack of clinical data, they are compiling a case series of victims of GHB-facilitated sexual assault, to be published and utilized for education of clinicians, law enforcement and the public.

The case series combines:
1) Subjective data from the victim regarding her description of events (setting, symptoms, assault if he/she remembers it, aftermath)
2) Clinical data from the sexual assault exam
3) Toxicologic confirmation of GHB and other intoxicants
4) Corroborative police reports, if available and necessary

In order to be included in the case series, the victim must have tested GHB Positive by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis of either blood or urine. Unfortunately, they are only able to include those who have such toxicologic confirmation of GHB in this study.

Please pass on the project description to potential participants or provide them with the contact information listed below, so that they may contact the researcher directly.
