"Each day in California brings a growing list of victims to the
crime of rape. These victims need help and it's time we stepped
forward." With that Clarion, Assemblymember Gloria Negrete
McLeod (D-Chino) has announced that she has introduced Assembly
Bill 190, a measure which will allow all Californians to donate
through the state income tax check-off program to support the
California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) and the
statewide network of Rape Crisis Centers that serve victims
throughout California.
"Each year, between January and April 15th, millions of
Californians will file their income taxes. While we are filling
out the income tax form, all of us will be able to consider a
gift to support the efforts of the Rape Crisis Centers as they
work to help these victims recover" Negrete McLeod continued.
"This is an effort that is worthy of support from all
Californians."
California's Rape Crisis Centers offer crisis intervention,
counseling, advocacy and support in order to heal and empower
sexual assault survivors, their family members and friends.
There is on average one reported rape every 53 minutes in
California, which amounts to 190 every week.
"The funds raised from the tax check-off will give a much needed
shot in the arm to bolster the safety net of sexual
assault-related services in California", stated Marybeth Carter,
Executive Director of CALCASA, on behalf of California's 70 rape
crisis centers and the sponsor of the legislation.
CALCASA was founded in 1980 and is the only state wide
organization whose sole purpose is to promote public policy,
advocacy, training and technical assistance on the issue of
sexual assault. |
